I can’t guarantee Fener goals – Van Persie

Robin van Persie is refusing to set himself a goal target for new club Fenerbahce.

The former Arsenal captain joined the Turkish giants for €6.5m from Manchester United this summer.

According to Goal, the 31-year-old made his debut for Fenerbahce on Tuesday as they drew Shakhtar Donetsk 0-0 on home soil in their Champions League third-round qualification first leg.

Expectations are high that Van Persie can help Fenerbahce topple Galatasaray as Super Lig champions in 2015-16, but the Dutch forward stressed factors other than his own form will affect his goalscoring tally.

“The fans have made me very happy. I was very proud in my first game,” he told the club’s official television channel. “I couldn’t wait for my first game to show my passion for Fenerbahce.

“I promise to give Fener my all and I hope it all goes well. I can’t promise 10, 20 or 30 goals. This depends on the team performance, I can only promise to do the best I can.”

Van Persie also referenced his prolific period in the latter half of 2010-11 with Arsenal – when he scored 18 goals in 19 league games – as an example of how he can bounce back from injury in fine form.

“I scored many goals in those five months at Arsenal after I’d been injured,” the Holland international added.

“Then I started over. Life is not always positive.

“I am never satisfied with what I’ve accomplished, complacency causes setbacks. I’ve learned a bit of Turkish. I started to work in my spare time in the classroom.”

My wife didn’t like our son’s music career –Femi Falana

Music sensation, Falz, is enjoying every moment in the spotlight but before he got there, he had to cross some hurdles at home. Saturday Beats learnt that although his father, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, did not have any problem with his decision, his mother, Funmi who is also a lawyer had her reservation.

Falana said that his wife initially struggled to accept the career choices of their children who chose to practise other professions aside from law.

Falana, who was a guest speaker at a valedictory service and prize giving day ceremony of Crown Heights College, Ibadan, recently, shared his personal experience with parents at the event, urging them not to force any profession on their children.

He said, “Don’t force any course on your children; don’t insist that they must be a doctor or a lawyer. My son Folarin, who was working in our chambers, came to inform me one day that he wanted to leave. I said I could find him a place in one of my friends’ chambers. But he said no, ‘I’m going to be a musician’. When I asked why, he convinced me but he couldn’t convince his mother because she’s also a lawyer. Today, he’s doing well as a musician and not as a lawyer. So let’s debate with our children to know what they want to do.”

Falana also shared the story of the late Nigerian music legend, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, who chose to study music against his parents’ wish for him to become a medical doctor.

He urged the graduating students of the school to be focus and their parents to “develop interests in the affairs of their children.”
